BOARD OPPORTUNITY

Position: Executive Director (Part-time)
Type: board of directors position / unpaid
Organization: Women's Healthy Environments Network
Location: downtown Toronto, Ontario

The Women’s Healthy Environments Network is looking to recruit a part-time Executive Director who is able to chart a path for growth and expand our reach!

The Women’s Healthy Environments Network (WHEN) is looking for a dynamic individual to demonstrate organizational leadership skills as a part-time Executive Director and support a not-for-profit organization to “take action for prevention” on issues related to health and the environment. This position is part-time at 12 hours per week for a 3 month contract. The position will start in early April 2017.

We are a unique organization, working in the space where women’s lives, environmental issues and human health intersect. Since its inception in 1994, Women's Healthy Environments Network (WHEN) has been educating the general public, media and policy makers that environmental health is a key determinant of public health. WHEN is currently in a pivotal moment; we’re challenging status quo, and preparing to make waves in the environmental and women’s health space.

The successful candidate will provide advisory support and organizational leadership to an 8-12 member board in areas of administration, and the design and implementation of projects. This is a non-voting position with the responsibility to enable the effective implementation of the Board’s decisions.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the organization
  • Acting as a signing authority (along with the Chair and Treasurer) at the organization’s banking institution
  • Documenting and updating board policies and procedures upon Board direction
  • Acting as the primary liaison with WHEN’s volunteers – acting as the first point of contact, and ensuring volunteers are informed of opportunities available throughout the year, managing and mentoring volunteers throughout their various projects
  • Facilitating the development of a work plan based on the Board’s strategic priorities and supporting the Chair in her work to lead the implementation of the Board’s commitments
  • Attending monthly Board meetings (one evening per month at the Centre for Social Innovation, downtown Toronto)
  • Assisting the Board of directors with implementing an aggressive fundraising strategy

This is a time-limited contract position; depending on WHEN’s financial position there may be opportunity for extension. Today, WHEN functions as a working board with the support of one part-time staff Executive Director and project-specific volunteers. The intention is to evolve the organization to the point of full-time paid staff through an aggressive fundraising strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Comfortable representing WHEN’s mission and values
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Collaborative, confident facilitator
  • Excellent organizational and problem solving skills
  • Minimum 3-5 years of direct experience with program development and/or project management, ideally in a non-profit setting
  • Experience and understanding of non-profit sector, either through direct work experience or Board experience
  • Experience with strategic thinking and long-term planning
  • Fundraising and development experience an asset
  • Knowledge of environmental health issues an asset
  • Volunteer management experience an asset
