WORK-TRADE / VOLUNTEER

Position: Environmental Education and Leadership Assistant
Type: volunteer with room & board, mentorship, small honorarium (see below)
Organization: Cheakamus Centre
Location: Brackendale, Squamish, British Columbia

JOB DESCRIPTION

This short-term residential volunteer position plays a supporting role in the educational programming at Cheakamus Centre. Duties to be undertaken will include acting as a leadership mentor for youth, supporting high school counsellors, teachers and Outdoor School program staff during programs, updating program materials and participating in stewardship initiatives. This volunteer position is a great opportunity to develop skills and gain experience in outdoor environmental education and youth leadership through close mentorship by program staff.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist program staff in supporting youth leaders on field studies and during afternoon and evening programs
• Provide program support to visiting teachers and Cheakamus Centre staff
• Assist program staff with the training of high school counsellors
• Assist Cheakamus Centre staff with stewardship initiatives
• Develop environmental education resources and update program materials

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Experience working with children and/or youth in outdoor educational settings
• Strong interest in developing leadership skills
• Works effectively independently and in a collaborative team environment
• Ability to work varied hours including evenings and occasional weekends
• Friendly, positive and enthusiastic approach
• Strong communications skills
• First Aid Certificate preferred– OFA Level 1 or higher

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Valid driver’s license preferred
• Experience working in a residential outdoor learning environment
• Strong interest in developing experience in outdoor and environmental learning and leadership
• Proficiency in computer and internet use including Microsoft Office

Seasonal Terms: Immediately to December 16, 2016 (excluding holidays and non-programming times)

January 9, 2017 - May 19, 2017 (excluding holidays and non-programming times)

Cheakamus Centre, Brackendale, BC (Near Squamish)

COMPENSATION

Room & Board, mentorship in environmental education and leadership + small honorarium are provided.
