Position: Environmental Health Project Leader
Organization: Ottawa Biosphere Eco-City Initiative (OBEC)
Location: Ottawa, Ontario

Current need:

OBEC is looking for a volunteer to lead the development of an upcoming Environmental Health Workshop in winter 2017. The main role of a Project Leader will be to coordinate other volunteers to:

  • Secure a meeting location.

  • Find three or four organizations to present their environmental health projects.

  • Invite topical experts and the public to attend and discuss presented projects.

  • Organize registration and refreshments.

  • Record any findings of the workshop.

Volunteers are already in place on the project team. Other volunteers from OBEC Council (description in next paragraph) will assist on the day of the workshop.

The Ottawa Biosphere Eco-City Initiative (OBEC) is a federally registered charitable organization, working to engage residents of Ottawa in sustainability. It uses ten Themes and simple Tools to promote understanding, involvement, initiative and sharing. OBEC currently has about 20 members who meet monthly in an open forum called the OBEC Council to discuss issues and develop activities. An elected Board of six (6) members also meets monthly to provide strategic direction, including project approval and funding.

Successful past projects of OBEC include: 1. Public workshop on Agricultural Biodiversity; 2. Self-Guided Ottawa Sustainability Tour; 3. Training of high school students to lead their schools in sustainability planning; 4. Database of (hundreds of) sustainability projects (ongoing).

Essential qualifications:

The candidate leading this project should have:

  • Experience leading a team or initiative.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects.

  • Ability to record and report data.

Asset qualifications (desirable but not required)

  • Knowledge of environmental health.

  • Experience in coordinating events.

Commitment: The coordinating work for this role is expected to take five to eight (5-8) hours per week for up to three (3) months.
