(1) Eco-Experience Centres & Ecovillages
There is a growing number of environmental, ecological, or
sustainable living Learning Centres across Ontario and Canada. Also, ecovillages around the
world serve as living demonstrations of organic, sustainable living.
Why not participate in a workshop, volunteer, or inquire about
apprenticeship & work opportunities? Some of these centres have very active programs, as well as a variety of volunteer, barter and apprenticeship opportunities. The offerings vary greatly from one centre to another, and from year to year. Workshop schedules are usually posted on their websites in late winter or early spring. The best way not to miss out is to e-mail centres that interest you, and ask them to send their calendar when it comes out. Please note that some of these centres are operated from peoples homes, without corporate or government funding. Please be considerate in your requests. Do not contact home-based centres later than eight or nine in the evening, unless they specify otherwise. Try to ask not only what they can offer you, but what you can offer them – if only willing hands and an open mind! |

The warmth of a summer's breeze is caressing your face as you rise to survey the garden beds for signs of new growth, your eyes squinting into the morning sun for signs of furry visitor sin distant orchard or vineyard. You finish your morning chores and head for the kitchen to help the others with breakfast, bathed in the aroma of fresh apples, herbs, eggs and pancakes with home-made maple syrup. Soon, it's off to the barn for more communal chores. And so your simple day goes. Though there seems no end to the work to be done, you enjoy it and feel truly blessed. And after a time, it dawns on you. You haven't left the homestead in days or even weeks. You haven't needed any outside help or entertainment. And you haven't needed any money or excessive possessions. Nature has provided everything you needed to live well." – Orion Wilson (who has wwoofed extensively in Ontario, Canada) (see www.planetfriendly.net/wwoof.html or www.planetfriendly.net/organic.html#wwoof for more information and links) |

(3) Resource Centres, Groups & Gathering Places
Many cities and towns have some kind of green/public interest resource centre, where you can find a wide variety of literature, books and videos ...as well as information about courses, workshops, local groups and opportunities. Failing that, the offices of local groups are likely to have some resources to browse or purchase. Other places where you can find both information and community: independent bookstores, natural food stores, food co-ops, libraries, farmers markets, churches and mosques, college & university student councils, and community centres. Ask for a community bulletin board with local events, volunteer opps., skills exchange, car-sharing, etc. |
