Whether you call it climate change or global warming, it is happening. Scientists say that we are already experiencing impacts, and they are likely to increase. Impacts include the effects of extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, ice storms and hurricanes, but also increased threats from infectious diseases and armed conflict. And there is no doubt that human activity – largely through the release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the use of fossil fuels – is responsible the current pace of climate change.

Rajendra Pachauri, head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said in November: "If there's no action before 2012, that's too late. What we do in the next two to three years will determine our future. This is the defining moment."
